Waterville Named “Gig Town” upon Completion of New all Fiber Internet Network

Waterville Named “Gig Town” upon Completion of New all Fiber Internet Network 852

Aug. 29 event attended by Kimberly Lindloff, president and CEO of the Mid Maine Chamber of Commerce

Waterville was named a Gig Town during a ribbon cutting event honoring the city on Aug. 29, hosted by Fidium. Residents and small businesses in the city now have access to multi-gig speed fiber internet from Fidium, kicking off a future filled with numerous economic, educational, employment and entertainment benefits.

During the event held at Bricks Coworking Wednesday afternoon, Kimberly Lindloff, president and CEO of the Mid Maine Chamber of Commerce shared her excitement about the future for Waterville.

"When selling this region, it’s expected that we will have connectivity,” said Kimberly Lindlof, President & CEO, Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce. “Now we can say that Waterville has ultra-fast speeds from 50 Megabytes per second - 2 Gigs for our businesses and residents alike. Fidium’s 100% fiber Internet is more dependable with symmetrical upload and download speeds and is the fastest connection in order to get your work completed – whether you are business professional, a student, or relying on the internet for your telehealth needs.”

Fiber internet has been shown to increase real estate values, attract new businesses, create more and better job opportunities, and improve health outcomes due to better access to telehealth services.

“Today more than 12,000 homes and businesses in Waterville have access to our all-fiber network,” said Simon Thorne, senior manager government affairs for Consolidated Communications. “This new network and better access will allow the town to grow and thrive in ways you may not have imagined. Generations of residents will see new employment and economic opportunities, the town will be more attractive to new businesses, while helping existing businesses grow. Fiber opens up a world of new opportunities.”
