Great Diamond Island and Little Diamond Island celebrate new Gig Island status at ribbon cutting
Local and state officials, business leaders and community members celebrated both Great Diamond Island and Little Diamond Island’s new statuses as Gig Islands during a ribbon cutting on June 27. Following years of dedicated work by the local Broadband Committee and funding support from Maine Connectivity Authority, both islands are now 100% served with fiber internet from Fidium.
Gig Town designations – or in the case of these communities, Gig Islands - are presented to communities with broad access to multi-gigabit fiber internet for residents and businesses, which connects communities to wide ranging benefits - economic, educational, employment, entertainment and more - that accompany better internet access.
The celebration included remarks by Danielle West, City Manager for Portland, Sarah Davis, Vice President of Market Development for Consolidated Communications, representatives from the Maine Connectivity Authority, representatives from the Island Institute and Great Diamond Island residents.
