Fidium Fiber expands multi-gig internet to Milton
Fidium Fiber is set to expand its fiber internet service to Milton
MILTON — Fidium Fiber is set to expand its fiber internet service to Milton and nearby communities, bringing multi-gig internet access to over 5,700 homes and businesses.
Construction is scheduled to begin as early as Sept. 14, marking a significant technological upgrade for residents and businesses who rely on internet connectivity for everything from remote work to education and healthcare.
According to Fidium Fiber’s parent company, Consolidated Communications, the expansion will not only provide faster internet speeds but also create more reliable service.
Jeffrey Austin, vice president of network planning and fiber build strategy at Consolidated Communications, said this fiber network will deliver symmetrical speeds, meaning equal upload and download rates, a major advantage over other types of internet service.
“Fiber broadband is considered the best internet service delivery method among 63% of U.S. consumers,” he said. “With the expansion of Fidium’s future-proof all-fiber network, residents and businesses will soon have access to multi-gig speed internet and the wide range of benefits that come with it.”
The fiber infrastructure build is expected to impact several areas in Milton, as well as parts of Colchester and Georgia. Installation will require both digging along roads and climbing utility poles to place new fiber-optic lines. This work will occur in public utility easements and along the edge of private property within the public right-of-way.
While there will be some inconveniences during the construction phase—such as noise, dust and temporary traffic detours—Fidium has pledged to minimize disruptions. Flags and paint markings will be used to designate active construction zones, and crews will work to clean up areas quickly after the work is complete.
“We are thrilled to bring Fidium Fiber to Milton and appreciate the community’s patience while we build this new infrastructure,” Austin said. “We’ll be working closely with local officials to keep them and residents informed as the project progresses.”
Fiber internet offers substantial benefits over traditional broadband services, especially in terms of speed and reliability. Fidium Fiber’s network will provide symmetrical speeds ranging from 100 megabits per second (Mbps) to 2 gigabits per second (2,000 Mbps), allowing users to upload and download data at the same high speeds. This is a crucial factor for remote workers, students and businesses that need consistent, high-performance internet.
“Expanded access to fiber internet means increased educational, economic, healthcare, and entertainment opportunities for the community,” Austin said.
He also said the presence of fiber internet can increase a home’s value by as much as 4.9 percent, making it a worthwhile investment for both residents and the town as a whole.
The expansion aligns with broader trends in the United States, where an increasing number of people are working from home and require reliable internet service. Recent research from the Fiber Broadband Association showed 58% of Americans now have the option to work remotely, and a stable internet connection is essential for these workers to maintain productivity.
Fiber networks are also less susceptible to congestion and interference, providing a more consistent experience even during peak usage times.
“Whether you're a remote worker, a gamer, or just someone who needs a stable connection for everyday activities, fiber broadband offers unparalleled reliability,” Austin said.
Fidium Fiber plans to keep Milton residents informed throughout the construction process, using multiple channels to distribute updates. These include mailers, door hangers and construction alerts.
Additionally, Fidium representatives will visit neighborhoods to provide information about what to expect during the installation and how to sign up for service as soon as it becomes available.
For residents with specific concerns or questions, Fidium has set up a dedicated helpline at 877-769-4771. The company is also encouraging people to check their address for service availability on the company’s website, FidiumFiber.com, where interested individuals can sign up for updates.
“We believe in keeping an open line of communication with the community,” Austin said. “By providing regular updates and visiting neighborhoods, we aim to make this transition as smooth as possible for everyone involved.”
This expansion is part of Fidium Fiber’s larger effort to bring high-speed internet to underserved areas across Vermont and the broader Northeast. Fidium’s service is already available in over 100,000 locations in Vermont, including nearby towns like Colchester, Essex Junction and St. Albans. Since 2020, Consolidated Communications has invested more than $117 million to expand fiber internet across the state.
“Fiber brings tremendous benefits and transforms how we connect to one another,” Austin said. “It increases access to educational resources, healthcare services, and entertainment options, while also fueling economic growth.”
Research shows that gigabit fiber can contribute as much as $326 billion to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP). For Milton, this could translate into new opportunities for local businesses and increased property values, as more people seek homes with access to high-speed internet.
As technology continues to evolve, having a robust fiber network will ensure that Milton is well-positioned to adapt to future needs. Whether it’s supporting more remote workers, facilitating telehealth services or simply ensuring that residents can stream their favorite shows without interruption, the expansion of Fidium Fiber’s network represents a leap forward for the town.
For those interested in being among the first to access Fidium’s multi-gig speeds, pre-ordering is available through Fidium’s website. Pre-ordering is free of commitment but provides priority installation once the service is live.
“We know how much of a game changer access to fiber is for residents and local businesses, and we are excited to be building the future together with Milton and communities across Vermont,” Austin said.
